Andre Nolan Dawson was born on July 10, 1954 in Miami, FL. He is the son of Mattie Brown. Dawson’s father wasn’t around in his life and he was raised primarily by his mother and grandmother. Early on baseball became a passion of Dawson. He started watching the game at nine years old. It was during his childhood Dawson would get the nickname ‘The Hawk’ from his uncle. He got the nickname from the way he attacked the baseball, the type of tenacity that propelled him to a Hall of Fame baseball career.

 

 

Dawson attended Southwest Miami High School. He played both football and baseball. His sports career was almost derailed before it started as he suffered a knee injury playing football during his senior year. As a result, Dawson wasn’t able to secure a college scholarship. He would become a walk-on at Florida A&M University.

Dawson played baseball at Florida A&M University for three years. His team had a 64-19 record during his time there. He earned All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in two of his three years. In 1974 and 1975, Dawson led his team in several major categories including hits, HRs and RBIs.

Andre Dawson MLB Career Stats and Notes

Dawson was selected in the 11th round of the 1975 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos. He would spend 11 years with the team from Canada until signing with the Chicago Cubs in 1987. After six years in the Windy City, The Hawk played two seasons with the Boston Red Sox. In 1995, Dawson signed with the Florida Marlins and spent two years there before retiring after the 1996 season. In 2010, Dawson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1987, Dawson’s first season with the Cubs was a memorable but bittersweet one. The Cubs weren’t good that year, finishing last in the NL East with a 76-85 record. However, Dawson was the bright spot for the Cubs. The Hawk was unstoppable that season, hitting .287 and set career highs with 49 HRs and 137 RBIs. His play earned him the NL MVP.
