William Stanley Mazeroski was born on September 5, 1934, in Wheeling, WV. He is the son of Mayme and Lee Mazeroski. The Mazeroskis lived off of the Ohio River banks. His father was a coal miner, and the money was hard to come by. They lived in a one room house with no electricity or running water. Despite the poverty living conditions, his father found time to teach him the game of baseball. It was time well spent as it would lead young Bill all the way to the Hall of Fame.

Mazeroski attended Warren Consolidated High School. He was an All-State selection in basketball, setting scoring records his senior year. However as talented as he was on the hardwood, his father had other plans for his kid. Lew, along with Bill's head coach, wanted the young athlete to go the baseball route. They took Bill to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move paid off as he was offered a minor league deal.

Bill Mazeroski 9th Inning Game Winning HR in Game 7 of 1960 World Series

Any kid who loves baseball dreamt of a scenario of hitting a home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the World Series. We play it out in our backyards or any baseball field countless times. Mazeroski lived out that dream and will forever be a Pittsburgh Pirates’ legend.

On October 13, 1960 in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, Mazeroski and the Pirates were tied 9-9 with the New York Yankees at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Mazeroski was the first hitter up. After taking a high 1st pitch for a ball, Mazeroski blasted the second pitch over the left field walls, giving the Pirates a 10-9 win and their first World Series title in 35 years. It was the first ever walk-off World Series HR.
