Larry Wayne Jones Jr., who is commonly known as Chipper Jones, was born on April 24, 1972 in DeLand, FL. He is the son of Lynne and Larry Wayne Jones Sr. Larry Jr. got the nickname ‘Chipper’ as he was considered a ‘chip off the old block’ due to his father’s resemblance. Besides the looks and the name, there was something else Chipper and his father had in common: baseball.

Larry Sr. played college baseball back in his day and was a baseball coach. So naturally he taught young Chipper the game. They spent hours upon hours together playing baseball during Chipper’s youth. The time and practice paid off as Chipper became one of the best baseball player in the state of Florida.

Chipper attended multiple high schools during his teenage years. His first high school was Taylor High School, which he stayed for his freshman year. During that year, young threw a one-hitter. As a sophomore, he transferred to The Bolles School. Although Chipper was the quarterback for his high school team and made All-State his junior year, baseball was where all the hype was at. In fact, after a sensational senior year, Chipper was a two-time All-State baseball selection, named Florida’s Player of the Year and was the runner-up for National Player of the Year. He was one of the nation’s top prospects coming out that year and that was validated by the Atlanta Braves when they selected Chipper with the number one overall pick.

Chipper Jones 1999 NL MVP Season

In 1999, there was nothing ‘chipper’ about Larry Jones when it came to opposing pitchers. That season, Jones hit .319 with 45 HR and 110 RBI. He led the Braves to the NL East crown with a 103-59 record, the eighth of their unprecedented 14 straight division title wins (1991-2005, no division winner in 1994 due to strike).
