Harmon Clayton Killebrew was born on June 29, 1936 in Payette, ID. He was the son of Katherine Pearl May Killebrew and Clayton Killebrew Sr. A former college football player and professional wrestler, Clayton got his sons into sports early. Harmon was the best of the crew, and his athletic talents shown in any sport he played.
Harmon attended Payette High School. He was a three sport star, excelling in football, baseball and basketball. He earned All-American honors as a quarterback. Harmon had such a stellar high school career that he had his high school jersey retired. With all the scholarship offers he had and some close to home, Harmon decided to continue his athletic career at a school where it all started - College of Idaho.
However his stint in college wasn’t long. He only spent one semester in school. Harmon, instead, decided to play semipro baseball and caught the eyes of a Washington Senators’ scouting director. The Senators’ organization was so impressed with Killebrew that not only did they sign him, he would make his debut just a few days later - as a 17 year old.
