Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker was born on August 18, 1934 in Carolina, PR. He was the son of Luisa Walker and Don Melchor Clemente. Growing up, Clemente had to be mature beyond his age. Raised in poverty, Roberto would work different jobs to help his family. Although he had grown up responsibilities, young Roberto was still able to be a kid and play sports. His athletic gifts paved a way for him out of poverty and to become one of the best baseball players in MLB history.
Clemente went to Julio Vizcarrondo Coronado High School. He played softball and baseball. He also threw the javelin in rack and field
After high school, Clemente played professional baseball for the Santurce Cangrejeros . The team featured two future Hall of Famers, himself and Willie Mays. The team would win the Caribbean Series in 1954. In that same year, Clemente was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers. After playing in the minors for a season, he was eventually picked up by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the draft.

Roberto Clemente MLB Career Stats and Notes
Clemente would make his major league debut on April 17, 1955. He spent his entire major league career with the Pirates, which spanned 18 seasons. His career, and more tragically his life, came to an end after the 1972 season. Clemente and several others were killed in an airplane crash delivering humanitarian aid to Nicaragua on December 31, 1972. Clemente was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.
Roberto Clemente 3,000th Hit
The tragic loss of Clemente on the last day of 1972 made his 3,000th hit more memorable - as it would be his last. On September 30, 1972, the Pirates were playing at home against the New York Mets. In the 4th inning, Clemente hit a double to notch his 3,000 career hit. For decades, the 3,000 hit milestone has been a sure sign of a great hitter in the major leagues. Clemente was one of the best to do it and it's fitting his last hit made him the first Latin American player to reach 3,000 hits.
