Robin R. Yount was born on September 16, 1955 in Danville, IL. He is the son of Marion and Phil Yount. The Yount family moved to California when Robin was very young. As he grew up, baseball was a way of life for him and his family. Robin began playing baseball early with his area’s little league team. If he wasn’t playing organized team baseball, he was playing baseball with his friends in the backyard. A bonus to his development was that his older brother, Larry, was in the minor leagues. Robin was able to access the game unlike most kids his age. He took full advantage of that opportunity and in doing so made him ready for the big show at a very early age.

Yount attended Taft High School. He played football, baseball and basketball while in high school. However, there was no doubt baseball was his passion. Robin impressed the scouts with his arm strength and mobility. He was a top prospect and the Milwaukee Brewers selected him 3rd overall in the 1973 MLB Draft.

It didn’t take long after Robin arrived to the team to show he wasn’t gonna need a lot of time in the minor leagues. As a result, he became the Brewers starting shortstop at 18 years old, one of the youngest players in MLB history to pull off this feat.

Robin Yount MLB Career Stats and Notes

Yount made his major league debut on April 5, 1974. His career spanned 20 years, all with the Brewers. Yount retired after the 1993 season. In 1999, the three-time All-Star was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Robin Yount 1982 AL MVP Season

In 1982, Yount had one spectacular season, and the Milwaukee Brewers benefitted. The star shortstop hit .331 with 29 HRs and 114 RBI. In the last game of the season, the Brewers and Baltimore Orioles were tied atop the AL East. With the division title on the line, Yount provided the spark, and power, the team needed. He blasted two home runs in the first three innings to propel the Brewers to a convincing 10-2 win to clinch the AL East title.

That win ignited the Brewers’ postseason run. They marched into the World Series after defeating Reggie Jackson and the California Angels 4-1 in the ALCS.

Yount and the Brewers’ magical ride came to a disappointing end in the World Series. They played the St. Louis Cardinals and the series went to distance. However the Cardinals won the seventh and deciding game at home, 6–3, to capture the title. Yount did his best, hitting .414 with 6 RBI. All season Yount delivered and was rewarded with the 1982 AL MVP Award. He would win another MVP Award in 1989.
