Stanley Frank Musial was born on November 21, 1920, in Donora, PA. He was the son of Mary and Lukasz Musial. Growing up, one of the greatest baseball players in MLB history didn’t start out playing the sport. He started out in gymnastics.at a Polish sports club. It wouldn’t be long before Musial started playing baseball. His father didn’t like the game, but his mother helped by making balls out of cloth for him to hit.

Musial attended Donora High School. He was a two-sport athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball. Although he was a special talent on the hardwood, baseball became the sport of choice. Musial was so good that at age 16, he was offered a contract to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. After going back and forth with his family, Stan signed with the team in 1937.

His time in the minors changed his entire baseball trajectory. A shoulder injury forced Musial, who was primarily a pitcher, to move to the outfield. The move paid dividends as he would become one of the great power hitters of his era.

Stan Musial Historic 5-HR Doubleheader Day

On May 2, 1954, Stan the Man had one of the greatest days for a power hitter in MLB history. The Cardinals faced Willie Mays and the New York Giants at home in a doubleheader. In the first game, Stan blasted three homers in a 10-6 win. That has been done more than once. What hasn’t been out done ever was what he did in the second game.

In a 9-7 loss in Game 2, Musial went yard twice more, giving him five HRs total in the two games which set a mark that has only been tied once (Nate Colbert hit five HRs in a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on August 1, 1972).
