Vladimir Alvino Guerrero Sr. was born on February 9, 1975 in Nizao, Dominican Republic. He is the son of Altagracia Alvino and Damian Guerrero (stepfather). Vladimir had a challenging childhood growing up. His father and mother split when she was pregnant. Left to take care of five children, his mother did her best however the conditions were rough. For instance, they stayed in a small unit with no running water. To help out his family Vlad had to take on jobs during his youth. So much work he had to do that he eventually dropped out of school by the fifth grade . Through the tough times, Guerrero was able to play baseball. As he got older he and his brothers caught the attention of several major league teams.

At the age of 16, Vladimir attended the Los Angeles Dodgers Dominican Academy. His brothers got offers from the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox around this time. The Dodgers and several other clubs passed on Vladimir. However the Montreal Expos saw the raw talent in Guerrero and signed him to a minor league deal in 1992.
