Walter Ray Allen was born on July 20, 1975 in Merced, CA. He is the son of Flora and Walter Allen Sr.  Born into a military family, Ray moved around a lot during his younger years. He lived overseas in Europe as well as in several states in America. Wherever he moved, however, Ray always played basketball.

Ray attended Hillcrest High School. He starred on the court, leading his high school team to their first ever state title. With several colleges to choose from, Ray accepted a scholarship offer from UConn.

Ray Allen NBA Career Stats and Notes

Ray was selected fifth overall in the 1996 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. However he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a draft day trade. Ray spent the first eight years of his NBA career with the Bucks before being traded during the 2002-03 season to the Seattle Super Sonics. Allen was becoming a perennial All-Star at this time in his career, averaged a career best 26.7 ppg in 2006-07.

During the 2007-08, Allen was on the move again, teaming up with Paul Pierce and Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett in Boston. The mid-season additions made the Celtics instant contenders and they would go on to win the NBA title that year, beating their arch rival Los Angeles Lakers 4-2.

Ray spent a total of five season with the Celtics before spending two years with the Miami Heat. The 2013-14 season turned out to be his last season although he didn’t officially retire from the NBA until 2016. In 2018, Allen was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He retired holding the NBA record for most career three pointers made in NBA history with 2,973.

Ray Allen Clutch Three Pointer in Game 6 of 2013 NBA Finals

Although Allen won his first NBA title in 2008, his greatest moment is perhaps the most clutch bucket in NBA history. In Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals, Allen’s Miami Heat trailed the San Antonio Spurs in the game 95-92 and in the series 3-2. Facing elimination on their home court the Heat needed a miracle. As the seconds ticked down on perhaps the Heat’s final possession of the season, LeBron James launched a three that missed. Chris Bosh gathered the rebound and passed it to Allen who instinctively backed up just enough beyond the three point line and fired a three heard around the world. His shot tied the game and saved the Heat’s season. The Heat would win in OT and then win game seven to seal their second straight NBA title.
